Between May 2010 and late 2011, a violent conflict erupted between two competing factions of the fractured Milenio Cartel. One side was headed by a violent individual known as “El Mencho”, while the other faction were commanded by a group who considered themselves the rightful successors of the Nava Valencia brothers, the captured Milenio leaders. A violent turf war began with both sides attempting to assert themselves as the one true Milenio Cartel. Mencho’s enemies were bolstered by recruits from the Sinaloa and La Familia Michaocána Cartels, which created a unified organization of gunmen that became known as La Resistencia. These groups now fought for control over the regions of Jalisco, and the important drug routes that generated millions of dollars, which would leave chaos and destruction and only one side would emerge triumphant.
